It's Time Again for 2nd Sunday Cinema

On the second Sunday evening of every month, Pastors Chris and Darrell Johnson host a movie-watching group at Schoenbrunn Community Moravian Church. Popcorn is available, of course!

But even better than a good flick and a snack is the opportunity to come together for fellowship, and for conversation about faith and life as sparked by the featured movie.

Our next session will be Sunday evening, August 13, from 6-8:30 p.m. Folding chairs will be set up, but feel free to bring your favorite portable seat.

This monthly event is brought to you through the Ohio Moravian Ministries Commission:  Strengthening our local ministries and engaging in cooperative ministries
for the upbuilding of the Body of Christ.

2nd Sunday Cinema Moves to 3rd Sunday

During May ONLY, 2nd Sunday Cinema will move to the 3rd Sunday of the month to avoid infringing on Mother's Day celebrations.

Come on Sunday, May 21 from 6-9 p.m. to watch an inspiring movie and then stay a bit longer to talk about it from a faith perspective. We meet at Schoenbrunn Community Moravian Church, 2200 E. High Avenue in New Philadelphia.
Please use the lower parking lot and the Fellowship Hall entrance.

While licensing regulations prevent us from publishing the name of the movie, you'll recognize this recent Academy Award nominee as...

... the incredible untold story of Katherine G. Johnson (Taraji P. Henson), Dorothy Vaughan (Octavia Spencer) and Mary Jackson (Janelle MonĂ¡e)-brilliant African-American women working at NASA, who served as the brains behind one of the greatest operations in history: the launch of astronaut John Glenn into orbit, a stunning achievement that restored the nation's confidence, turned around the Space Race, and galvanized the world. The visionary trio crossed all gender and race lines to inspire generations to dream big.

Adults and older teens are welcomed to participate. Bring friends! The movie is rated PG for thematic elements and some language.

2nd Sunday Cinema: Special Edition

Tomorrow will bring us to the 2nd Sunday of April and the monthly gathering known as 2nd Sunday Cinema where we come together to watch and discuss movies from a faith perspective. Tomorrow will also be Palm Sunday, the beginning of Holy Week. To accommodate all the significant observances that will be taking place in our congregations, 2nd Sunday Cinema will meet at a special time   --2:00 p.m.

Join us for the screening of a film that reminds us of the impact of Jesus' death and resurrection. Told through the fictionalized perspective of Clavius, a Roman soldier and his aide, Lucius, the two are tasked with solving the mystery of what happened to Jesus in the weeks following the crucifixion in order to disprove the rumors of a risen Messiah and prevent an uprising in Jerusalem.* It is an intriguing approach to the Easter Story. (Warning: There are violent scenes in the film. It is rated PG-13.)

2nd Sunday Cinema takes place at Schoenbrunn Community Moravian Church, 2200 E. High Avenue in New Philadelphia, Ohio. Please use the parking lot behind the building and enter through the door to Fellowship Hall. Part of the Shared Ministry effort of the Moravian Churches in Tuscarawas County, this event is open to any older teens and adults who would like to participate.

*Licensing rules prevent us from publicizing the name of the movie on this page.

2nd Sunday Cinema

I know, I know. For movie people, this coming Sunday night is already a Big Deal. But don't let a little scheduling conflict get in the way! Set your DVR to capture the Academy Awards, and then come to Schoenbrunn Community Moravian Church where we'll share in fellowship and faith conversations around a terrific film from 2015.

Copyright restrictions prevent us from naming the movie, but here's a description:

This inspirational sports drama tells the story of a high school football coach who begins a new job in McFarland, California, an agricultural community where many of the immigrant students double as field laborers before school and on weekends. While football doesn't go especially well, Coach White recognizes innate qualities of strength, perseverance, and speed among his athletes. Thinking outside the box, Coach White introduces a new way to build on their abilities and help them succeed as cross country runners. Along the way, cultural and racial misgivings arise but dissipate as relationships develop.

Join us from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. on February 12 (and EVERY 2nd Sunday). Please park in the lower lot and use the back door.

All are welcome! This is a shared ministry venture of all Tuscarawas County Moravian Churches.

On the Second Sunday, Come to the Cinema

Copyright restrictions prevent us from publicizing the name of the movie we'll be showing and discussing at
2nd Sunday Cinema on
December 11 from 6 - 9 p.m.,
but feel free to guess the title of a recent release starring Jennifer Gardner as the mother of a critically ill child. A heart-warming, faith-first kind of movie, this little miracle of a film is appropriate for all audiences.

Shown on the Big Screen at Schoenbrunn Community Moravian Church, the movie will provide the catalyst for a faith-based discussion to follow. Refreshments (probably Christmas cookies!) will be available. Folding chairs are provided, but feel free to bring a lawn chair of your own if you'll be more comfortable.

2nd Sunday Cinema is part of the Shared Ministry Opportunities offered among the 6 Moravian congregations in Tuscarawas County. All are welcomed! Check back for more events in 2017.

Second Sunday Cinema

Join us for Second Sunday Cinema this coming Sunday evening, November 13, from 6-9 p.m. We will meet downstairs at Schoenbrunn Community Moravian Church where we will turn our attention to The Big Screen and watch a movie together. Afterwards, we'll talk about the themes of faith and spirituality the film introduces.

Licensing restrictions prevent us from publicizing titles, but we can tell you that Sunday night's selection is from 2014 and features Bill Murray and Melissa McCarthy in "a heart-affecting cinematic parable about the saints among us who enable us to come alive in new ways." It is rated PG-13 and tackles mature themes.

Snacks will be available for the cost of  your donation. Folding chairs are
provided, but feel free to bring your own lawn chair or chaise lounge if it will add to your comfort.

Bring a friend or 2 or 10! Second Sunday Cinema is part of the Shared Ministry Opportunities being offered cooperatively through the Moravian Churches of Tuscarawas County. All are welcomed. For further information, please speak with your congregation's OMMC representative, or call The Rev. Christine Johnson at 484-894-9077.
