Have a Listen

This coming Sunday evening, December 3, when we gather for worship on the first night of Advent (scroll down to previous post), our special musical guests will be the talented members of the Mainstreet Brass Quintet.

While Sunday night's repertoire will be filled with Christmas music (of course!), here is a sample of the group playing other-than-Christmas arrangements. Click on the link and enjoy!

Shine With Us

The Advent Season begins on December 3, and with it, we have the first of many beautiful opportunities to prepare our hearts for encountering Christ at Christmas. Join us!

(For GPS directions, enter 4776 Moravian Church Road SE, New Philadelphia)

We gather with Moravian sisters and brothers from across Ohio for this annual worship tradition of celebrating Holy Communion together. The Rev. Ben Lippert (our region’s most recently ordained Moravian minister and the new pastor of Schoenbrunn Community Moravian Church) will preach the Word. Sister Angie Miller will lead a combined choir in offering a beautiful anthem.

And it will be a special treat when Allen Frank and his acclaimed quintet, Mainstreet Brass, fill the beautiful, Moravian Star-lit sanctuary of the Sharon Moravian Church with sound. The American Organist Magazine says Mainstreet Brass is “a well-knit, finely blended ensemble.” And the International Trumpet Guild Journal praises the group for “high-flying virtuosic playing.”

Please invite friends and family for an uplifting, seasonally-tuned, God-honoring evening.

It's A Great Time to Try a New Class!

As part of the Monday with the Ministers series, a new, 3-week class begins TONIGHT. Meeting at Schoenbrunn Community Moravian Church (2200 East High Avenue in New Philadelphia), The Rev. John Wallace will offer  "Brush Strokes of Faith" from 6:30-7:45 p.m.

Pastor John says, "Here is a way to explore your faith and become aware of how the visual arts enrich and enhance our overall faith experience. We will start by viewing classic masterworks by many great artists. Then we will see how these images probe our faith and challenge our soul."

Included in the presentations will be the work of John Valentine Haidt, a Moravian painter and keeper of Moravian art and history.

You may attend any or all of the "Brushstrokes of Faith" sessions being offered tonight, October 30, November 6 and/or November 13. There is no cost to participate, and all are welcomed.

Speaking of the visual arts, there is still time to register for the next "Spiritual Splatter" session with our resident artist, Sheila Davis. Sheila will help participants create a painting appropriate for November and its attention to giving God thanks for countless blessings.

The Summer Series: 2nd Sunday Cinema

It's very odd trying to promote a movie-based discussion group when the license agreement allowing us to publicly show popular films also prohibits us from publishing the film titles! Do we let a little publicity challenge like that stand in our way! Of course not! And so we announce to you,as best we can, our summer line-up of movies meant to spark conversations about faith and life and how we both experience and talk about God.

2nd Sunday Cinema meets at Schoenbrunn Moravian Community Church at 6:00 p.m. on, you guessed it, the second Sunday of each month. Depending on the length of the movie and the depth of our discussion, we finish no later than 9:00 p.m., but sometimes earlier. Please use the back parking lot and the door to Fellowship Hall. Our gatherings are geared toward adults and older teens. If you have any questions, please call Rev. Chris Johnson at 484-894-9077.

The Moravian Churches of Tuscarawas County often share in ministry opportunities together. This is one of those efforts! 2nd Sunday Cinema is sponsored by the Ohio Moravian Ministries Commission (OMMC).

2nd Sunday Cinema Moves to 3rd Sunday

During May ONLY, 2nd Sunday Cinema will move to the 3rd Sunday of the month to avoid infringing on Mother's Day celebrations.

Come on Sunday, May 21 from 6-9 p.m. to watch an inspiring movie and then stay a bit longer to talk about it from a faith perspective. We meet at Schoenbrunn Community Moravian Church, 2200 E. High Avenue in New Philadelphia.
Please use the lower parking lot and the Fellowship Hall entrance.

While licensing regulations prevent us from publishing the name of the movie, you'll recognize this recent Academy Award nominee as...

... the incredible untold story of Katherine G. Johnson (Taraji P. Henson), Dorothy Vaughan (Octavia Spencer) and Mary Jackson (Janelle Monáe)-brilliant African-American women working at NASA, who served as the brains behind one of the greatest operations in history: the launch of astronaut John Glenn into orbit, a stunning achievement that restored the nation's confidence, turned around the Space Race, and galvanized the world. The visionary trio crossed all gender and race lines to inspire generations to dream big.

Guys' Night Paint Session

For about a year now, Sheila Davis has been offering painting classes as a spiritual discipline. These "Spiritual Splatter" sessions have been extremely popular...but they've had a tendency to be populated by women. Not wanting men to miss out on all the creative benefits of artistry and fellowship, Sheila has designed a project especially for a Guys' Night Paint Session:

Thursday, April 27
7 p.m. - 9 p.m.

Fry's Valley Moravian Church

594 Fry's Valley Road SW
New Philadelphia, Ohio

Cost for the session: $25. This includes all the materials needed to complete a 12" X 12" canvas, instruction, and refreshments.

2nd Sunday Cinema: Special Edition

Tomorrow will bring us to the 2nd Sunday of April and the monthly gathering known as 2nd Sunday Cinema where we come together to watch and discuss movies from a faith perspective. Tomorrow will also be Palm Sunday, the beginning of Holy Week. To accommodate all the significant observances that will be taking place in our congregations, 2nd Sunday Cinema will meet at a special time   --2:00 p.m.

Join us for the screening of a film that reminds us of the impact of Jesus' death and resurrection. Told through the fictionalized perspective of Clavius, a Roman soldier and his aide, Lucius, the two are tasked with solving the mystery of what happened to Jesus in the weeks following the crucifixion in order to disprove the rumors of a risen Messiah and prevent an uprising in Jerusalem.* It is an intriguing approach to the Easter Story. (Warning: There are violent scenes in the film. It is rated PG-13.)

2nd Sunday Cinema takes place at Schoenbrunn Community Moravian Church, 2200 E. High Avenue in New Philadelphia, Ohio. Please use the parking lot behind the building and enter through the door to Fellowship Hall. Part of the Shared Ministry effort of the Moravian Churches in Tuscarawas County, this event is open to any older teens and adults who would like to participate.

*Licensing rules prevent us from publicizing the name of the movie on this page.

2nd Sunday Cinema

I know, I know. For movie people, this coming Sunday night is already a Big Deal. But don't let a little scheduling conflict get in the way! Set your DVR to capture the Academy Awards, and then come to Schoenbrunn Community Moravian Church where we'll share in fellowship and faith conversations around a terrific film from 2015.

Copyright restrictions prevent us from naming the movie, but here's a description:

This inspirational sports drama tells the story of a high school football coach who begins a new job in McFarland, California, an agricultural community where many of the immigrant students double as field laborers before school and on weekends. While football doesn't go especially well, Coach White recognizes innate qualities of strength, perseverance, and speed among his athletes. Thinking outside the box, Coach White introduces a new way to build on their abilities and help them succeed as cross country runners. Along the way, cultural and racial misgivings arise but dissipate as relationships develop.

Join us from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. on February 12 (and EVERY 2nd Sunday). Please park in the lower lot and use the back door.

All are welcome! This is a shared ministry venture of all Tuscarawas County Moravian Churches.
